MISSION VIEJO : Council OKs $59,000 for Shelter Kennels

Agreeing that it would be hard to have an animal shelter without something to put the animals in, the City Council approved spending $59,000 to buy kennels for the shelter project.

The purchase will be the latest step in the city’s efforts to develop its own animal control program.

“We’ve already approved the budget (for the city animal shelter). This is one of the first steps to build it,” Councilwoman Susan Withrow said.

Since July, when the city allowed its contract with the county to expire, two animal control officers have been hired to administer a pro-life program. Mission Viejo strays are rounded up and brought to a kennel in Santa Ana, where they are kept until homes can be found for them. A group of local volunteers help run the program.

The authorization to buy the kennels was done on the recommendation of an architect who is designing a shelter for the city. The shelter would be located near Saddleback College, close to Marguerite and Avery parkways.

The 37-acre property was purchased recently by the city from the Mission Viejo Co. for $1 million. Estimates place the cost of the building at about $800,000. City officials hope the building will be ready by next year.
