Two Women Sign to Play for SDSU

The San Diego State women’s basketball team signed two players to national letters of intent Friday: Olivia DiCamilli of Costa Mesa and Atiya Williams of Irvington, N.J.

DiCamilli, 5 feet 10, is a guard at Costa Mesa High with an average of 22.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. She twice led Costa Mesa to the Southern Section Division III championship game.

Williams, a 6-5 center from Irvington High, averaged 12.5 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and two steals per game last season. She was named All-Conference the past two seasons and is a preseason Street and Smith’s Honorable Mention All-American.

Erica Scholl scored 13 points and grabbed 23 rebounds to lead host UC San Diego to a 85-60 victory over Colorado College. Sara Mease added 20 points and three rebounds for UCSD

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Hank Egan gets his first peek at this season’s University of San Diego team when the Toreros play host to the Russian National Select team tonight at 7:30 at the USD Sports Center.

Six lettermen, including three starters: guard Geoff Probst, forward Gylan Dottin and center Brooks Barnhard, will lead the Toreros, who finished 14-14 last season. Other returners are swingman Joe Temple, forward/center Christopher Grant and guard Neal Meyer.

Tonight’s game is the Russian team’s 12th on their 17-game U.S. tour. Earlier in the week the team played at Air Force, Colorado and Nevada Las Vegas.

USD completes its exhibition schedule Nov. 28 against Marathon Oil. The Toreros open their regular season Dec. 1 against San Diego State at the Sports Arena.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Point Loma Nazarene opened the 1992-93 season with an 82-64 victory over The Master’s College in front of 400 at Golden Gymnasium. Guard Christy Stevens scored 32 points in 32 minutes to lead the Crusaders (1-0), including 11 points in the first 3:30. Stevens made seven three-pointers. Danielle Phipps had 12 for PLNC.

Jennifer Wrightson and Amy McMahon each had 10 kills, and Jennifer Lofftus and Nikki Wallace added nine apiece to lead USD to a season-closing 15-8, 15-10, 15-10 victory over Cal State Northridge. The Toreros finish 17-14. The Matadors are 26-7.

San Diego State improved to 22-9 with a 15-10, 15-17, 15-10, 6-15, 15-10 victory over New Mexico in front of 1,428 at Johnson Arena in Albuquerque. Gracie Schutt had 26 kills for the Aztecs, and Stephanie Riley and Jennifer Miller added 21 and 19. The Lobos are 16-10.

FISHING

Trout season opened at Santee Lakes Regional Park and Campground. Lakes three and four were stocked 2,400 pounds of trout with regular stockings of 1,200 scheduled to continue throughout the season. The park is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to sunset.

WATER POLO

Top-seeded UCSD routed Redlands, 19-2, to advance to the semifinals of the Western Water Polo Assn. Championship at Claremont College. Mike Nalu led the Tritons with three goals.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UCSD got 24 points from Chris Moore and 17 rebounds from San Diego High alumnus Andy Swindall and beat visiting Occidental, 88-74, in its season opener at Triton Gymnasium.
