Big Doings in Long Beach: Two rarely performed oratorios, Arnold Schoenberg’s 1917 “Jacob’s Ladder” and the American premiere of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s 1970 “Turning, I Saw Great Injustice,” will be presented by Long Beach Opera on Feb. 11, 13, 14 at the Terrace Theatre in Long Beach. Said to be the largest undertaking in the opera’s history, both works are performed on a massive set of ladders and ramps that surrounds the orchestra. “Jacob’s” calls for 12 soloists, an orchestra of 120 placed in three locations and five choruses totaling 100 voices. “Turning” has two actors, baritone and a large percussion and brass ensemble. The works are a co-production between Long Beach Opera and two German companies.
