BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Grahe and Orton Put on DL

Share

The Angels, who have been playing with a 22-man roster this week because of injuries and a player suspension, have decided to put right-handed reliever Joe Grahe and catcher John Orton on the disabled list.

Grahe, who has not pitched since last Friday because of tendinitis in his rotator cuff, will be replaced by left-hander Jerry Nielsen, called up from triple-A Vancouver. Nielsen has a 2-2 record and a 5.02 earned-run average. Grahe is eligible to be activated June 20.

Orton, who suffered a strained left thumb June 1 but played left field the next night after the brawl against Toronto, is eligible to return June 18. He will be replaced by Larry Gonzales, who hit .263 with one homer and 14 runs batted in at Vancouver. The Angels probably would have recalled Chris Turner instead of Gonzales, but Turner has a sore shoulder.

The Angels still have to wait until Saturday to return to full strength, however, when center fielder Chad Curtis will return after his three-day suspension for his role in last week’s brawl.
