Drug-Abuse Center Offers Legal Aid

Free legal help is available to the public Wednesday nights at El Centro Human Services, a substance-abuse treatment center.

The sessions, led by a lawyer volunteer, assist people with basic legal services, said Raul Estrada, case manager.

“We have a domestic violence program and a lot of the women we were enrolling needed restraining orders” against husbands and boyfriends, Estrada said. “We were referring them to various legal aid centers and they were great. They do a good job, but there are set hours and they get swamped.”

The volunteer, attorney Lewis Metzinger, suggested that law students from UCLA may be recruited to help out if the demand increases. The service has been offered for four weeks, Estrada said. Appointments are not necessary.

The legal clinic is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the center, 1972 Brooklyn Ave.
