Millikan’s Late Touchdowns Topple Westminster

Long Beach Millikan scored two touchdowns in the final 5 minutes 38 seconds to defeat luckless Westminster, 15-7, Friday night at Westminster High.

Tyree Cooks, who had only seven yards in three carries midway into the fourth quarter, broke loose for a 23-yard gain to give the Rams to ball on the Westminster nine. Two plays later, he broke through the middle to cut the Westminster lead to 7-6.

The Lions, who lost to La Quinta last week on a touchdown with no time left, appeared to have a change of luck when the snap on the extra point attempt was bobbled. Holder Russ Snyder, however, was able to find the grip and avoid the rush to scamper in for a two-point conversion, giving Millikan an 8-7 lead.

Cooks’ 54-yard touchdown run with 2:49 left in the game sealed the victory.

Millikan dominated the first half, but a successful goal-line stand by Westminster in the final minute of the first half kept the game scoreless.

Westminster, which had only 10 yards total offense in the opening half, took the lead in the third quarter on a six-yard run by Jerry Allison and David Jarrick’s conversion.

Millikan workhorse Mike Moody carried the ball 16 times for 107 yards and caught four passes for 28 yards.
