A 49-yard touchdown pass from halfback Lamont Warren to Charles Johnson in the fourth quarter lifted No. 18 Colorado to a 21-16 Big Eight Conference victory over Iowa State Saturday at Ames, Iowa.

Iowa State, 3-8 overall and 2-5 in the Big Eight, scored 13 fourth-quarter points to stay close to Colorado (7-3-1, 5-1-1), which finished second in conference and secured a coalition bowl bid.

It was Colorado’s 10th consecutive victory over the Cyclones.

Colorado quarterback Kordell Stewart completed eight of 17 passes for 103 yards, increasing his season passing yardage total to 2,299, a school record. He also rushed for 113 yards.

Johnson, the Big Eight’s leading receiver, caught six passes for 123 yards and one touchdown, bringing his season totals to 1,082 yards, 57 receptions and nine touchdowns.

Colorado’s No. 2 receiver, Michael Westbrook, was left in Boulder after walking away from practice on Wednesday. Although Westbrook came back Thursday, McCartney penalized him a game, but said he could play in a bowl.

Jeff St. Clair, a walk-on freshman quarterback, entered the game in the second quarter for Iowa State when Todd Doxzon suffered a concussion. St. Clair rushed for 118 yards.

“This was every walk-on’s dream,” St. Clair said.

No. 20 Kansas State 21, Oklahoma St. 17--A two-yard touchdown pass from Chad May to tight end Brad Seib with 17 seconds left concluded an 80-yard, one-minute drive that gave the Wildcats the victory at Stillwater, Okla.

Oklahoma State (3-8, 0-7) had taken a 17-14 lead on a 43-yard field goal by Lawson Vaughn with 58 seconds left.

Kansas State (8-2-1, 4-2-1) drove to the winning touchdown despite having no timeouts left.

May, a transfer from Cal State Fullerton who starred at Damien High in La Verne, completed five of six passes on the final drive, all of them sideline patterns that allowed Kansas State’s receivers to get out of bounds.

Of May, Kansas State Coach Bill Snyder said: “I’ve been coaching for a long time. I’ve been around a lot of great quarterbacks, seen a lot of come-from-behind victories, seen a lot of great two-minute drives. Nothing matches the one Chad engineered today.”

Kansas 28, Missouri 0--June Henley scored two touchdowns and broke the Big Eight freshman rushing record at Lawrence, Kan.

Henley gained 115 yards to increase his Big Eight-leading season total to 1,124. The record for a Big Eight freshman was 1,114 by Kansas’ Kerwin Bell in 1980.

Kansas finished 5-7 and 3-4. Missouri (3-7-1, 2-5) lost a school-record 16th straight on the road.
