COUNTERPOINT: Friends of Hillary Rodham Clinton are fighting back against her critics over Whitewater. Nearly 100 of them took out a full-page ad in the New York Times this week to show their support. Among them: Laguna Beach’s Janice Johnson, whose husband, Roger, is General Services Administration director. . . . Johnson, who donated $1,000 for the ad, says: “I think it’s great. I’m proud to support it. It puts in better words than I can how I feel about Hillary at this point. I thought I’d better put my money where my mouth is.”

CARING NEIGHBORS: Diana Colosio, wife of slain Mexican presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio, will soon receive condolences postmarked Orange County. Los Amigos of Orange County, led by Latino community leaders, will send a letter after its weekly meeting in Anaheim today. . . . Says Los Amigos Chairman Amin David: “Not only do we express our sorrow for her and her kids’ tremendous loss, but also for the loss to Mexico.”

BEYOND GAMES: Willie Herron of Laguna Hills is one of five artists commissioned to paint murals across Los Angeles for the World Cup soccer tournament beginning in June. Eight games will be played in Los Angeles, and murals will be painted along freeways and at LAX. . . . Herron’s mural, “Solo Unido, Un Mundo Vencera,” will express the meaning of its title, which conveys, Herron says, “the hope that one day we can be a victorious world if all the races unite.”

WINDOW DRESSING? There’s interest in Cypress in enforcing an old city ordinance that prohibits businesses from blocking more than 10% of their windows with ads. It’s to help police protect against burglary. Problem is, merchants love to advertise and tend to ignore the law. . . . City Atty. John E. Cavanaugh got a laugh this week when he told the City Council: “We’re not required by law to enforce our own ordinances.” . . . The merchants can rest awhile--the Cypress council hasn’t decided what to do.
