Liberty League Seeks Change in Dividing of Playoff Profits

Share

Liberty League officials have submitted a proposal to the Southern Section that would change the way playoff profits are divided among schools.

Under the current system, the section receives 50% of profits from each playoff game, and the participating schools split the other 50%. Under the Liberty League plan, all profits from playoff competition would be returned to the Southern Section and used primarily to reduce membership fees and expand coaching education programs.

The proposal will be debated at the next general council meeting on April 29.

“I always felt a little uncomfortable that whether a team wins or loses determines how much money the school will be getting,” said Eric Walter, athletic director at Oakwood School and president of the Liberty League. “If we’re supposed to have a notion of cooperation rather than competition, then more schools would benefit. If nothing else this will get people thinking and change the status quo.”
