LOS ANGELES : Arson Fire Sweeps Through Vacant Apartment Building
Fire swept through the top floor of a vacant, four-story apartment building in Hollywood on Thursday afternoon, jamming homebound commuter traffic throughout the area.
About 100 firefighters responded to the blaze that broke out about 5 p.m. in the building at 1720 N. Taft Avenue. The fire was controlled in about 40 minutes and officials said that it had been set. They said the building was vacant because of damage suffered in the January earthquake. There were no reports of injuries.
Earlier Thursday, fire damaged part of another vacant apartment building about 10 blocks away, at 5523 Lexington Avenue. Four firefighters received minor injuries battling that blaze. The causes of both fires were under investigation.
