The San Diego Padres, with the 13th-ranked offense in a 14-team league, tied a team record by scoring 13 runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second inning Tuesday night in San Diego for their fifth consecutive victory, 15-5.

The Padres set a club record by having the first 11 batters reach base in the inning, and matched a club mark for runs and hits in an inning set last Aug. 24 in the first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Bip Roberts hit a three-run homer, Phil Plantier added a three-run triple and pitcher Andy Benes (3-9) had a two-run double in the second inning, when the Padres got nine of their season-high 16 hits.

The Padres, beginning the game batting .251, benefited from three walks and errors by pitchers Steve Cooke (1-5) and John Hope in the inning.

Atlanta 6, San Francisco 3--Javier Lopez broke a ninth-inning tie with a leadoff homer for the Braves in San Francisco. But the real story was new Brave leadoff hitter Roberto Kelly, who hit a two-run homer in the seventh.

Since being acquired from the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday in a trade for Deion Sanders, Kelly is four for nine with a double and a home run as the Braves have staged consecutive game-winning rallies.

Overshadowed was the Giants’ Matt Williams, who homered in the first inning, tying the National League record for homers in the first two months of the season at 19. The NL record was set in 1987 by Eric Davis of Cincinnati. Ken Griffey Jr. of Seattle set the major league record with 22 this year.

Colorado 3, New York 2--Greg Harris gave up five hits in eight innings to lead the Rockies in New York.

Walt Weiss went three for four and drove in a run for the Rockies, while former Met Howard Johnson went two for four with an RBI.

Harris (3-4) struck out three and gave up one walk before being replaced by Bruce Ruffin, who pitched the ninth for his fifth save. Doug Linton (4-2) took the loss while giving up six hits and three runs in five innings.

Philadelphia 8, Chicago 7--Jim Eisenreich’s two-out RBI single in the eighth inning beat the Cubs in Chicago.

Trailing by 7-5 in the eighth, the Phillies rallied for three runs against Jose Bautista and Randy Myers (0-2). Kim Batiste and Mickey Morandini got singles against Bautista, then Myers retired the next two before Mariano Duncan hit a two-run double to tie the score at 7.

Eisenreich, 10 for 23 in his last seven games, followed with a single to left, ending Chicago’s seven-game home winning streak.

Typical of the Cubs’ evening, it was Jose Guzman Photo Card Night at Wrigley Field--and the team announced that pitcher Guzman would undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder and might be sidelined for the season.

Houston 5, Florida 3--Andujar Cedeno hit a two-run single to break an eighth-inning tie for the Astros in Houston.

In the eighth, Luis Gonzalez and Chris Donnels hit two-out singles, then pinch-hitter Kevin Bass walked to load the bases. Cedeno followed with a single to left field off Richie Lewis (1-3).

Cincinnati 5, Montreal 4--Reggie Sanders led off the bottom of the 13th inning with his second homer of the game to give the Reds the victory at Cincinnati.

Sanders worked Jeff Shaw (2-2) to a full count, fouled off a breaking ball and then hit a belt-high fastball beyond the wall in center field for his ninth homer. Cincinnati’s third victory in its last 11 games made the Reds 7-1 in extra-inning games this season.

Kevin Mitchell put the Reds ahead by 3-1 in the fourth with his fourth homer in seven at-bats. Mitchell now has 15 homers, four shy of his total last season.
