PREP CROSS-COUNTRY : Sanchez and Garritson Highlight Meets This Weekend
Runners from more than 70 high schools will compete Saturday at the Dana Hills Invitational cross-country meet, which begins at 8 a.m.
The competition will have three divisions based on school enrollment, and the races will be by grade level except the three combination junior-senior girls’ races.
Irvine, the county’s top-ranked girls’ team, meets No. 3 El Toro, which produced the fastest team time at Saturday’s Woodbridge Invitational, in a junior-senior Division I race at 9:15 a.m.
The boys’ senior Division I race, beginning at 9:30, features Capistrano Valley’s Adalberto Sanchez, who finished third at last year’s Orange County Championships.
Three ranked teams--No. 2 Newport Harbor, No. 5 Villa Park and No. 8 Laguna Hills--will compete in the senior Division II boys’ race. The girls’ junior-senior Division II race will feature No. 9 Los Alamitos, Laguna Hills, Canyon and Newport Harbor.
Division III competition, which begins at noon, is highlighted by San Diego Scripps Ranch, Corona del Mar and Trabuco Hills.
In North Orange County on Saturday, more than 1,000 runners from 50 high schools will take part in the 17th Sonora Invitational, which begins at 7:20 a.m. at Carbon Canyon Regional Park.
Among those competing will be Buena Park’s Heather Garritson, who already has set the freshman record at the Laguna Hills Invitational and won the Division III frosh-soph race at the Woodbridge Invitational.
