Dennis Lundy gained 174 yards and became Northwestern’s career rushing leader in the Wildcats’ 20-7 upset victory over Indiana on Saturday at Bloomington, Ill.

Lundy scored on a 35-yard run and set up Northwestern’s first score with a 51-yard run as the Wildcats snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Hoosiers.

He raised his career total to 2,755 yards, topping the mark of 2,643 set by Bob Christian from 1987-90.

Northwestern, 3-3-1 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten, limited running back Alex Smith, whose 147.2 yards per average was fourth-best nationally, to 87 yards in 23 carries.

Indiana (5-2, 2-2) turned the ball over on fumbles twice and also failed to score when it had a first-and-goal on the seven-yard line in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback John Paci was thrown for a three-yard loss on first down. On the next play, a holding penalty nullified Paci’s run into the end zone. Paci gained five yards on the next play, but the drive ended with two incompletions.

A stunned homecoming crowd saw Northwestern open a 17-7 lead in the first half, when Lundy gained 114 yards in 12 rushes.

No. 11 Michigan 19, Illinois 14--Amani Toomer returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown and Remy Hamilton kicked four field goals as No. 11 Michigan beat Illinois at Champaign, Ill.

The loss ruined the Illini’s 70th anniversary celebration of Red Grange’s six-touchdown, 212-yard performance against Michigan. The Wolverines (5-2, 3-1) made sure there was no second coming of the Galloping Ghost; led by linebacker Steve Morrison, they held Illinois (4-3, 2-2) to 40 rushing yards.

Illinois was ranked second nationally on defense and hadn’t allowed a third-quarter point this season until Michigan scored 10 in that period to take a 19-7 lead.

The Illini scored on Scott Weaver’s eight-yard pass to Jason Dulick with 4:42 to play. But with Todd Collins completing two third-down passes to Jay Riemersma, the Wolverines maintained possession the rest of the way. Collins was 17 of 25 for 177 yards.

Toomer’s game-breaking punt return came 2:28 into the second half. He caught the ball near the right hashmark on his 28 and got running room thanks to Woodrow Hankins’ block of Tyrone Washington.

Tyrone Wheatley had only 73 rushing yards for Michigan.

Iowa 19, Michigan State 14--Kent Kahl’s second touchdown on a three-yard run with two minutes to play helped Iowa (3-5, 1-4) snap a five-game losing streak in beating Michigan State (2-5, 1-3) at Iowa City.

Iowa, using a fourth-string quarterback, stayed on the ground against the league’s worst rushing defense.

Michael Duprey, starting because of injuries to Iowa’s top three quarterbacks, completed only three of nine passes for 33 yards with one interception. Kahl gained 120 yards in 16 carries, and Sedrick Shaw, who led all rushers with 137 yards in 19 carries.
