REGIONAL ROUNDUP : Gustin Leads Wyoming Over Aztecs

John Gustin passed for five touchdowns and 401 yards to lead Wyoming to a 52-35 victory over San Diego State Saturday in a Western Athletic Conference game at Laramie, Wyo.

Gustin completed 31 of 42 passes, including touchdown passes of four, five, 25, 38 and 42 yards to lead the Cowboys (4-4, 2-2), who held only a 24-21 lead at halftime. The 38-yard touchdown pass to Brent Tillman was one of his 15 catches, breaking the school record of 13 set in 1992 by Ryan Yarborough.

Ryan Christopherson, who caught Gustin’s four-yard touchdown pass, rushed for 152 yards to increase his season total to 1,026, making him only the second Cowboy to have two consecutive seasons of 1,000 yards or more. The first was Dabby Dawson in 1988 and 1989.

Jake Campbell scored three touchdowns, two in a 21-point third quarter, and Air Force (4-3, 3-2) scored a 42-7 WAC victory over Fresno State (4-4, 2-2) at Air Force Academy, Colo. . . . John Walsh threw three touchdown passes as No. 21 Brigham Young (7-1, 5-1) used a balanced offense to hold off Texas El Paso (3-5, 1-4) at El Paso, 34-28. Walsh completed 26 of 39 passes for 330 yards and Jamal Willis ran for 136 yards and a touchdown in 19 carries. . . . Stoney Case ran for two touchdowns, passed for another and became the first major-college player in NCAA history to throw for more than 8,000 yards and run for more than 1,000 as New Mexico (2-6) won, 56-31, over New Mexico State (2-6) in a nonconference game at Las Cruces, N.M. Case, who scored his 26th career rushing touchdown, was 18 of 25 for 267 yards and rushed for another 49 yards.

Pennsylvania (5-0, 3-0) scored all its points in the first half in a 24-0 Ivy League victory over Brown (3-3, 0-3) at Providence. Terrance Stokes, who carried 22 times for 97 yards, scored two touchdowns for Penn, which won its 17th game in a row, the longest current streak in Division I-AA. . . . Aaron Berryman caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Per Larson with 49 seconds remaining as Cornell (6-0, 3-0) rallied for a 17-14 Ivy League victory over Dartmouth (3-3, 1-2) at Ithaca, N.Y. Cornell’s Chad Levitt rushed for 172 yards in 32 carries, his fourth consecutive 100-yard game. . . . Freshman Tom Ludwig had three interceptions as Princeton (5-1, 2-1) won its fifth in a row with an 18-7 victory over error-plagued Harvard (3-3, 1-2) in an Ivy League game at Princeton, N.J. . . . Jamie Schwalde completed 20 of 28 passes for 265 yards, giving Columbia (3-2-1, 1-2) a 30-9 victory over Yale (3-3, 1-2).

Kurt Heiss kicked a 24-yard field goal with no time remaining as Army (3-4) won its second consecutive one-point game, recording a 25-21 victory over The Citadel (3-4) at West Point, N.Y. . . . Marty Lowe completed 29 of 36 passes for 264 yards and Anthony Shelman scored two touchdowns in the decisive third quarter as Louisville (4-3), bouncing back from last week’s upset loss to Army, pulled away to a 35-14 victory over Navy (1-6) at Annapolis, Md.

BIG WEST

Mike Maxwell threw for four touchdowns and ran for a score as Nevada (7-1, 4-0) rolled to a 42-10 Big West victory over San Jose State (1-6, 1-1) at San Jose. . . . Junior Joe Abdullah carried 36 times for 272 yards, caught nine passes for 52 yards and scored three touchdowns as Pacific (4-3, 2-1) recorded a 30-16 Big West victory over Arkansas State (1-7, 0-4) at Jonesboro, Ark. . . . Fullback Kenyon Cotton ran for 146 yards and a touchdown to lead Southwestern Louisiana (4-4, 4-1) to a 27-25 Big West victory over Utah State (2-5, 1-2) at Logan, Utah.
