SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Valley College football team gave a record-setting performance in its regular-season finale Saturday night against visiting Santa Monica.

Quarterback Jim Arellanes established a single-season school record for passing yardage and receiver Brian Comer tied Valley’s single-season mark for touchdown receptions.

But the most important figure for the Monarchs was the final score, a 42-0 Western State Conference victory that wrapped up a berth in a postseason bowl for the second year in a row.

Valley (9-1, 9-1), ranked No. 9 in the state, is expected to receive a bid to play in the Orange County Bowl on Dec. 3 at Orange Coast College. Santa Monica finished 5-5, 4-5 in WSC play.

Arellanes entered the game needing 53 yards to break the passing-yardage mark of 3,134 set by Sean Fitzgerald last year. He completed 22 of 33 passes for 401 yards and five touchdowns.

Comer, who had eight receptions for 206 yards, scored on pass plays of 84, 55 and 17 yards. Comer has 13 touchdowns, tying the single-season mark set by James Reaves in 1987.

Valley led, 14-0, at halftime.
