GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Brea Beats Esperanza, Advances to Final

Brea-Olinda girls’ basketball team remained unbeaten, defeating Esperanza, 78-44, Friday in the semifinals of the Ladycat Classic at Brea. It was the program’s 61st consecutive victory.

Brea will play Torrance Bishop Montgomery at 7:30 tonight in the championship game.

Brea-Olinda (7-0) got 24 points from Kiyoko Miller and 17 each from Dawn Metz and Jennifer Saari.

Brea-Olinda, No. 2 in The Times’ preseason poll, held a 41-14 halftime lead over Esperanza (4-1), which was No. 9.

In another semifinal:

Torrance Bishop Montgomery 60, Ocean View 47--Jenileah Jones had 23 points for Bishop Montgomery. Becky Fraser had 20 points and 12 rebounds for Ocean View (2-3), which will play Esperanza tonight at 6.

Thousand Oaks 60, Fullerton 26--Michelle Stevenson had 10 points and 11 different players scored for Thousand Oaks. Nadia Hoerner had 16 to lead Fullerton (3-3). Thousand Oaks will play Mission Viejo in the consolation finals today at 4:30.

In the second round of the University tournament:

Aliso Niguel 72, Corona del Mar 52--Deanna Mitchelson had career-highs with 31 points and 26 rebounds for Aliso Niguel (3-1). The Wolverines also set team records with 72 points and 60 rebounds.

In the Rancho Bernardo tournament:

Edison 48, El Cajon Christian 39--Marie Philman had 21 points and 16 rebounds and Kerry O’Bric added seven points and five steals for Edison (3-1) in the semifinals. Edison will face Mater Dei in the finals tonight at 8:15.

Mater Dei 58, San Diego Vista 43--Melody Peterson scored 23 points and Ronnie Gondringer added 16 for Mater Dei (3-0).

In a consolation game of the San Marcos tournament:

Tustin 55, Ventura St. Bonaventure 31--Katie Scheuerman scored 17 points and had six assists and Alison Carr added 10 points for the Tillers (3-3), who play the winner of the Banning-Camarillo semifinal today.
