COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton Sweeps UNLV Series With 18-4 Victory

Cal State Fullerton used a four-run fifth inning and a seven-run eighth to beat host Nevada Las Vegas, 18-4, in Big West Conference baseball Saturday, completing a three-game sweep.

Tony Martinez had three hits, including a double and a home run, and drove in six runs for Fullerton (35-6, 10-2).

Mark Kotsay hit his 12th home run of the season and drove in three runs and Tony Miranda and C.J. Ankrum each had three hits and scored two runs for the Titans.

The Titans led, 3-0, in the third inning and held a 6-1 lead in the fourth before blowing the game open. Jeremy Giambi and Robert Matos each had two hits and two runs scored for Fullerton, which won its sixth in a row.

Starter Ted Silva (10-1) gave up three earned runs and 11 hits and struck out four in seven innings. Reliever Kimson Hollibaugh gave up a run and three hits in two innings. Nevada Las Vegas is 25-15, 6-6.

In another Big West baseball game:

San Jose State 6, Long Beach State 3--The Spartans scored three unearned runs with two out in the ninth inning at Long Beach to drop the 49ers (21-17-1, 8-4) two games behind Cal State Fullerton.

With the score tied, 3-3, the Spartans loaded the bases on two walks and an error by shortstop Jason Knupfer. Gabe Gonzalez then walked pinch-hitter John Alciati on a 3-2 pitch to force in a run and Jason Boesch followed with a two-run single.

Rich Ledeit gave up nine hits in eight innings for San Jose State (16-24-1, 3-9). He picked up the victory despite giving up Jason Hodges’ two-run triple in the first inning and Casey Snow’s pinch-hit, run-scoring single in the sixth. Mike DesRosches retired the 49ers in the ninth inning for the save.

Hodges’ triple extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

In Big West Conference softball:

Nevada Las Vegas 4-1, Long Beach State 1-2--Nicole Ochoa drove in Amanda Favorite in the fifth inning for host Long Beach State in the second game. Amy Miner (11-6) struck out five and gave up six hits for Long Beach State (25-22, 8-8).

Nevada Las Vegas’ Amie Stewart (17-5) gave up one hit and struck out five in the first game for the Rebels (31-10, 14-4). Kristyn Frady had a hit and scored Long Beach State’s only run.

The teams play again Wednesday in a doubleheader in Las Vegas.

In nonconference softball:

Loyola Marymount 5-6, Southern California College 1-0--Carrie Nelson had two hits and stole a base for visiting Southern California College (32-15) in the first game. Jennifer Merrow gave up five earned runs and nine hits for SCC in the second game. Loyola Marymount has a 12-game winning streak.

In the Long Beach State Grand Prix track meet:

Junta wins in jumps--Long Beach State’s Aaron Junta won the high jump (6-2) and triple jump (42-5 1/2).

The 49ers’ Marco Pitts won the 400 in 50.1, Damon Devault won the shotput (51 feet, 7 inches).
