A well-dressed man who threatened to kill an Orange County deputy Monday is a parolee with an extensive criminal history, investigators said Tuesday.

James Jay Hunt, 41, who remains at large, is the man who put a blue steal revolver in the face of a deputy after she approached the car he was sitting in, Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Dan Martini said. The suspect then blew out the front tires of her patrol car and fled.

Hunt was identified through a videotape from the patrol car’s camera as well as fingerprints taken from the scene and fed into a state computerized identification system, Martini said. Also known as James Clark, Hunt has served time for armed robbery, assaults, narcotics violations, burglary and possession of stolen property, Martini said.

Monday’s incident began when neighbors in the 2200 block of Redlands Drive called sheriff’s deputies to report that a man had been slumped over the steering wheel of a dark green car with the engine running for more than two hours, according to deputies. A deputy arrived about 1:30 p.m. and the man emerged with a revolver in his right hand shielded by a briefcase in his left.

When the deputy reached for her weapon, the assailant told her that he would shoot her in the head if she tried to stop him from getting away, investigators said.

Less than an hour later, the man entered the home of a Newport Beach woman and tied her up, took some some jewelry and left in her white Ford Mustang, license plate 1NAE345. She untied herself minutes later and called for help.

Neither the deputy nor the Newport Beach woman were injured.

Police are asking anyone with information about the suspect to call (714) 647-7055.
