SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Clothing containing the bones of an unidentified man was discovered by hunters early Wednesday morning in Angeles National Forest, but authorities said they have no idea how or when the man died.

The hunters found the remains near the intersection of Templin Highway and Ridge Route Road, a brush-covered mountain area several miles north of Castaic, said California Department of Fish and Game spokesman Patrick Moore. A short time later, at about 1 a.m., the men were confronted by two department employees on a night patrol for poachers.

“The guys there told our employees they had spotted what might be human bones nearby,” he said.

One of the Fish and Game employees located the remains and called police, Moore added.

Authorities apparently determined the body was that of a man because of the clothing discovered, said Scott Carrier of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. He said a full examination of the bones to determine the man’s age and identity probably will not be completed “until at least next week.”

It was not known Wednesday if all of the skeleton was recovered, Carrier added.

Carrier said it is possible the body could have been in the forest for several years, because large bones often do not decompose.

Sheriff’s homicide investigators are working on the case, but have not determined yet if the man died as a result of foul play, Deputy Gabe Ramirez said.
