PREP NOTES : Burgess Giving Up Girls’ Track and Field

Angela Burgess, who has the county’s top discus mark (140-5) this season and the third best shotput mark (40-8), has quit the Woodbridge track and field team to concentrate on basketball, her father, Ken Burgess, said Tuesday.

The 6-foot-4 Burgess, an All-Sea View League selection at center last season, left the team last week to work with a post-position coach, Ken Burgess said.

“We wanted her to get a good year under her belt,” Ken Burgess said of his daughter, who probably will enroll at a community college this fall. Among the schools she is considering is Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore., where she would play for former Golden West Coach Dave Strickland.

Woodbridge was expected to battle El Toro and Santa Margarita for the girls’ league title in track and field. The Warriors competed without Burgess on April 22 at the Orange County Championships, where they finished a distant second to Esperanza, 104-62.

Last year, Woodbridge finished fifth at the Southern Section Division II finals, where Burgess was second in the shotput and third in the discus. She was a Times All-Orange County second-team selection in both events.
