COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NATION : Papadakis Leaves Cal, May Go to USC

Share

Petros Papadakis, a widely recruited running back from Palos Verdes, has left California and may join his brother at USC.

If Papadakis chooses to transfer to USC, Pacific 10 rules will require him to sit out two years because he participated in practices at Cal.

However, Pac-10 rules also provide a petitioning procedure whereby an athlete can ask that the two-year term be reduced to one, if he is released from his letter of intent.

Papadakis’ older brother, Taso, is a sophomore linebacker at USC and his father, John, was a Trojan linebacker in the early ‘70s.

Petros Papadakis scored 22 touchdowns and gained 2,001 yards for Peninsula High last season.

Miami Coach Butch Davis selected fifth-year senior Ryan Collins as the Hurricanes’ starting quarterback.

Collins beat out sophomore Ryan Clement and second-year freshman Scott Covington for the job and will direct a new offense for Miami’s new coach beginning with the season opener, Sept. 2 against UCLA at the Rose Bowl.

Duan Everett, a North Carolina State linebacker, was suspended at least six games and four other players were placed on probation by Coach Mike O’Cain after a weekend break-in and assault at the apartment of a basketball player.

The other players charged with misdemeanor breaking and entering and assault charges in the Sunday morning incident were defensive lineman Mike Harrison, defensive backs Ricky Bell and James Walker and offensive lineman Lamont McCauley.
