COLLEGE FOOTBALL : It’s a Whale of a Finish for Washington’s Wales : Pacific 10: Kicker, a goat only two weeks ago, has big game in 33-30 victory over Washington State.
John Wales came a long way in two weeks.
The goat in Washington’s loss to Oregon on Nov. 4, Wales was the star Saturday when he kicked a 21-yard field goal with 1:02 left to give the No. 22 Huskies a 33-30 Apple Cup victory over Washington State.
“It feels great, it’s sweet redemption,” said Wales, a junior. “In the Oregon game, things didn’t go my way. You begin to doubt yourself, look for rocks to crawl under. I don’t want to feel that way again.”
The Washington victory meant a share of the Pac-10 title with USC.
“In my heart, I know we’re the best team in the conference and we’re better than SC,” the Huskies’ Damon Huard said.
The Huskies, 7-3-1 overall, tied Rose Bowl-bound USC for the league title at 6-1-1.
Washington State (3-8, 2-6) lost its sixth in a row, its longest losing streak in one season since dropping its last seven games in 1978, and dropped its fifth consecutive Apple Cup game in Seattle.
Washington is expected to play Dec. 29 in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.
Wales, only eight for 18 in field-goal tries coming into the game, also booted a 38-yarder in the third quarter as Washington overcame a 14-6 halftime deficit.
In a 24-22 loss to Oregon, Wales missed on a 33-yard attempt with 3:02 left and a 36-yarder with 1:07 to go. Both would have won the game.
