Pennsylvania kept its hopes alive for a fourth consecutive Ivy League title and an NCAA tournament berth with its eighth consecutive victory over Princeton, 63-49, at Philadelphia.

The triumph put Penn, 17-9 overall and 12-2 in the conference, in a tie for first place with the Tigers (20-6, 12-2). The two teams will meet Saturday night at Lehigh, with the winner going to the NCAA tournament.

Only Steve Goodrich, who scored 26 points, including Princeton’s first 14 points in the second half, was able to penetrate Penn’s tenacious man-to-man defense.

“I don’t think we can play better defense than that,” said Penn Coach Fran Dunphy, whose Quakers caused 17 turnovers.

Senior point guard Raimonds Miglinieks of UC Irvine was named the Big West Conference player of the year. Irvine’s Rod Baker was named coach of the year, and New Mexico State’s Charles Gosa was named freshman of the year in voting by the league’s 10 head coaches. Miglinieks, averaging 13.7 points and a nation-leading 8.6 assists per game, is joined on the All-Big West first team by James Cotton and Rasul Salahuddin of Long Beach State; Olivier Saint-Jean of San Jose State; Daniel Watts of Nevada, and Eric Franson of Utah State. . . . Arizona State Coach Bill Frieder said he initially considered resigning after the arrests of freshman recruits Tommie Prince of Compton, Rico Harris and George Gervin on sexual and physical assault charges involving a female student and another woman. However, he said he quickly reconsidered because “that would be running away from a tough situation. That would be running away from my kids.”
