Mariners Bite Big Apple, 4-2
The Ventura Mariners skated past another favored opponent with a 4-2 victory over the previously undefeated New York Apple Core on Thursday in the USA Hockey National Junior B Championships in Bridgewater, N.J.
Paul Goff, Danny Richards, Matt Szymanski and Stuart Pierce scored for the Mariners (38-15-1). Beau Gaddis stopped 20 shots by New York (35-1).
“We weren’t given much of a chance,” Ventura Coach Sean McGillivray said.
Goff’s goal 11 minutes into the game gave Ventura a 1-0 lead. Richards broke a 1-1 tie late in the second period and Syzmanski’s goal on a deflection late in the period gave the Mariners a 3-1 lead.
Ventura plays the Minnesota Metro Owls today.
