A small airplane en route from Burbank Airport to a private airstrip crashed in a remote area of Kern County on Saturday afternoon, killing three people and injuring a fourth, authorities said.

The Piper Cherokee went down shortly before 4 p.m. near its destination about 30 miles east of Bakersfield in an area known as Walker Basin, Kern County sheriff’s spokeswoman Kim Miller said.

The three bodies had not been removed from the wreckage late Saturday night, coroner’s officials said. No names were released.

Theodora Garnette, a nurse at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, said the survivor, a man in his late 20s or early 30s, suffered burns to his arms and face and was in fair condition.

Garnette said the survivor “walked away to a farm to call his mother” after the crash.

Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were expected to begin an investigation today.
