Fleury of Goals Powers Flames

Theoren Fleury scored three goals, including one on a penalty shot, to lead the Flames to a 5-1 victory Tuesday night over the Colorado Avalanche at Calgary.

The penalty shot came late in the third period when Colorado turned over the puck near the Calgary blue line and Fleury raced toward Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy before he was hauled down by Peter Forsberg.

Referee Mick McGeough immediately pointed to center ice and Fleury moments later moved in again and snapped a shot past Roy.

Fleury’s first goal came when Todd Hlushko poked the puck away from Joe Sakic at the Flames’ blue line, allowing Fleury to reach it. He raced in alone and beat Roy high on the stick side.

Calgary’s victory knocked Colorado out of first place in the Pacific Division, leaving the Flames tied for first with Edmonton.

Tampa Bay 6, New York Islanders 3--John Cullen had a goal and three assists, including his 500th NHL point, and Brian Bradley scored twice to lead the Lightning over the Islanders at New York.

Alexander Selivanov and Patrick Poulin scored early in a four-goal, first-period outburst for the Lightning, which has won nine of its last 10 games against New York.

Toronto 4, San Jose 3--The Maple Leafs, criticized by Coach Mike Murphy for uninspired play after losing five in a row, scored the first two goals of the game for the first time this season and defeated the Sharks at San Jose.

Mats Sundin opened the scoring on a pass from Sergei Berezin at 1:36, and Larry Murphy added a goal as Toronto took a 2-0 lead in the first.

Edmonton 5, Pittsburgh 2--Ryan Smyth scored two goals to power the Oilers past the struggling Penguins at Edmonton.

Smyth tied the game, 2-2, at 15:23 of the second period with his first goal of the game when he batted the puck past fallen goaltender Ken Wregget. He added an insurance goal at 15:04 of the third period.

St. Louis 2, Phoenix 1--Rookie Jim Campbell scored with 13:16 to play to lead the Blues past the Coyotes at Phoenix.

Geoff Courtnall, who assisted on both of the Blues’ goals, hit Campbell in stride between the circles and he beat goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin.
