Cal State Fullerton professor Maria Linder today will receive the Orange County Chapter of the American Chemical Society’s top award, Distinguished Service through Chemistry, for her ongoing contributions to science.

Linder, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry, was given the society’s national award for research at an undergraduate institution in 1993. The American Chemical Society is the nation’s largest scientific organization, officials said, with about 150,000 members nationwide and about 1,400 members in Orange County.

Richard L. Deming, a colleague of Linder and a society official, said her work has involved ongoing research on nutritional biochemistry, cancer and the genetics associated with the ability of animals to produce certain proteins.

In addition to having been published extensively in scientific journals, Linder has written books on nutritional biochemistry, metals and trace elements, Deming said.

“Her work is known throughout the world, and she participates in many international conferences,” he said.

The award will be presented during a ceremony at 7 tonight at the Holiday Inn-Costa Mesa, 3131 S. Bristol St.
