No Rocky Mountain High for Knight

Cincinnati Red Manager Ray Knight spent part of his off-day Tuesday at a Denver hospital room after a skiing accident.

Red spokesman Rob Butcher said Knight went to St. Anthony’s hospital to make sure he had no internal bleeding. The nature of Knight’s injury was not known, but it was not believed to be serious, Butcher said.

The Reds resume their three-game series with the Colorado Rockies today.

Relief pitcher Lance Painter, who pulled a hamstring while stretching over the weekend, was put on the 15-day disabled list before the team’s home opener against Montreal.

Painter, 29, is the seventh Cardinal player on the disabled list, joining pitchers Andy Benes, Rick Honeycutt, Danny Jackson and Brian Barber, outfielder Ray Lankford and catcher Tom Pagnozzi. The team called up catcher Danny Sheaffer from triple-A Louisville.

Before the game, Benes threw in the bullpen and was pronounced ready to begin a rehabilitation assignment for a rib-cage muscle injury suffered in spring training.

Benes will pitch Friday for Louisville in Tulsa, Okla., then again April 15. Manager Tony La Russa said that won’t be all. “You get six starts in spring training, so two shouldn’t be enough,” La Russa said. “We’re not going to rush any of these guys who missed a lot of getting-ready time.”

Atlanta pitcher Tom Glavine, once drafted by the NHL’s Kings, met with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman earlier in the day. Bettman was in Atlanta to meet with officials about bringing back an NHL franchise to Atlanta.
