A motorist who led police on a freeway chase and then pointed an assault rifle at the officers was killed early Tuesday, authorities said.

The suspect, in his mid-20s, died at the scene, said Los Angeles police Lt. Anthony Alba. His name was withheld pending notification of relatives. Neither officer was hurt.

The shooting occurred about 12:50 a.m. at Broadway and 90th Street, Alba said.

LAPD Officers Ronald Moy and Zachary Hutchings, both 32, were on the northbound Harbor Freeway in South-Central Los Angeles when the suspect sped past them, Alba said.

“When the officers attempted to stop the speeder, the suspect exited the freeway at Manchester Avenue, failing to stop for the red signal at the offramp and for the officers’ red lights,” Alba said.

At 90th Street and Broadway, the suspect crashed into a light pole, Alba said.

“The officers were starting to get out of their car when the suspect exited his car armed with a semiautomatic rifle similar to an AK-47 and pointed the weapon at the officers as he walked toward their car,” Alba said.

Both Moy and Hutchings fired their handguns at the suspect and fatally wounded him.
