Los Angeles Times reporter Ralph Vartabedian and a Contra Costa Times photographer were named sweepstakes winners--the top honor--in the contest.

Vartabedian was honored for his coverage of Boeing Co.’s $13.3-billion deal to buy McDonnell Douglas Corp.

Judges called his account a “sweeping story on a major event that combined hard reporting, strong reporting and various sources.”

Contra Costa Times photographer Larry Strong’s winning entry was a photo of a child being comforted by a counselor at a camp for young burn victims.

Los Angeles Times winners also included Lorena Iniguez for best news graphic. Iniguez was honored for her graphics in a series on the human brain.
