Athletes at Orange Coast College are scoring points in the classroom.

The 415 athletes competing on 24 teams boast a combined grade-point average of 2.89, about a B average. Students were enrolled in an average of 12.92 units, which represents the number of hours a week they are in class.

“They’ve demonstrated that they can get the job done in the classroom,” said Barry Wallace, athletic director.

Ranking first among the teams was the women’s golf squad, which has a combined 3.51 GPA. Women’s swimming came in second at 3.48 and women’s volleyball followed in third at 3.25.
