Singing Her Praises

I read with great interest Robert Hilburn’s interview with Diane Warren (“Largely Unseen, but Not Unsung,” Dec. 13). Her father, Dave Warren, was an avid bridge player and an occasional bridge partner of mine.

Dave was so proud of Diane. I remember when she had her first song recorded, Dave brought a tape of it in to the bridge club and played it for all of us. He was always telling us how she was going to be one of the great songwriters and he was right.

Even though he has been gone for many years, I am certain he is looking down saying “I told you so!” I only hope that Diane is aware of the love and pride her father had for her.

The variety of Diane Warren’s work is even greater than indicated. She also wrote for Selena and wrote the latest Boyz II Men song from the film “Prince of Egypt,” “I Will Get There.”

For music fans who read liner notes and want to know whose music and lyrics moved them, the name Diane Warren is very familiar. Diane, you are loved for the way your music can tap into the hidden regions of the hearts of people.

I thought it was interesting that Diane Warren has been in therapy for four years with a conflict of “Am I good enough? . . . Is it all going to end?”

Writing music is about exploration and there’s literally a universe to explore, so much, in fact, that if she had an eternity of lifetimes to explore it all she’d only scratch the surface. It could also be compared to going on an archeological dig and discovering artifacts.

How many archeologists go into therapy wondering if what they’re doing is worthwhile or if what they’ve discovered is any good or good enough? Diane, relax, you’re good enough. Enjoy the dig in your “Cave.”
