Panthers’ Lathon Out for the Season

Carolina Panther linebacker Lamar Lathon will be sidelined for the of the season because of knee problems.

Lathon, a starter since the franchise’s expansion season in 1995, has had surgery on his knees four times this year and was finally put on injured reserve. He will be replaced by Greg Lloyd, a 12-year veteran who has also had knee trouble.

Safety Mike Minter, who had arthroscopic knee surgery last week, is sidelined indefinitely.

Reggie Roby worked out a second time for the San Francisco 49ers, and he’ll be signed today as the team’s new punter.

The club already has agreed to terms with Roby and was considering how to make room on the roster for him.

Washington Redskin safety Jessie Campbell and guard Joe Patton will be sidelined because of knee injuries.

Patton, the only Redskin offensive lineman to start all 16 games last season, will be sidelined two to four weeks with a sprained ligament in his right knee. Campbell will have arthroscopic surgery today on his right knee.
