Newhall’s Pursley Wins Irwindale Late Model Race
Greg Pursley of Newhall led from start to finish to win the 50-lap NASCAR Super Late Model race before 2,571 at Irwindale Speedway on Friday night.
Pursley’s lone challenger for the lead during the race was Arleta’s Brian Kelley, but Kelley, starting from the pole in a Chevrolet, did not have enough for Pursley’s Ford.
He did have plenty of chances. There were six cautions in the race with the final one coming on lap 44.
Tim Woods III was challenging Shawn Calderwood for third place when Woods tapped Calderwood coming out of turn four. Calderwood spun in the front straightaway, but no damage was done to his car. On the restart, Pursley pulled away from Kelley for the victory, his fifth of the year in the series.
Points leader Rod Johnson finished sixth. Johnson’s lead over A.J. Dimarzo increased because Dimarzo dropped out of the race. Johnson has 516 points to 450 for Dimarzo.
Albert Sallie of Tujunga took the lead from Michael Pope on the fifth lap to win the NASCAR Street Stock race.
Sallie moved into third place in the points race, 88 behind Pope, with his third victory of the year.
Rob Hornsby of San Bernardino led all 20 laps in winning the NASCAR Mini Stock race.
