City’s Council on Aging to Discuss Conducting New Survey of Seniors
The Thousand Oaks Council on Aging will consider conducting a new survey of the needs of local seniors when it meets today.
If approved, the survey would likely be conducted next April or May and would be used to apprise city officials of seniors’ needs and opinions, said Roberta Baskerville, chairwoman of the Council on Aging.
Baskerville said the percentage of seniors among Thousand Oaks’ population is expected to grow in the next 10 to 15 years.
About 82 seniors filled out the last survey, which was conducted in 1997 and distributed at the Goebel Senior Adult Center. Public transportation, social programs and the availability of long-term care in the city were the leading concerns at the time, Baskerville said.
The new survey would be taken to various senior functions with the aim of getting more people to fill them out. Such surveys are an important way to reach the older population, Baskerville said.
“Sometimes they’re reticent to speak up or don’t know where to go with any comments they have,” she said. “We like to be the middle group between the senior and the city as much as we can.”
The council will meet at 1 p.m. in the Oak Room at City Hall, 2100 Thousand Oaks Blvd.
