Hundreds of dogs--big ones, little ones, fat and skinny ones--hounded the gates Saturday at the grand opening of Central Bark, the city’s new dog park.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the end of two years’ work to establish the 2.8-acre canine Camelot at 6405 Oak Canyon. The lighted park, open to any dog regardless of size, provides plenty of open space for local canines to roam about freely.

A special area has been set aside for Chihuahuas and other small pooches a little nervous about playing side-by-side with the likes of St. Bernards. A parking lot has also been built for the convenience of obedient humans who drive their best friends to the site, said Community Services Supt. Libby Cowan.

Saturday’s opening included a fair-like atmosphere, with vendors of dog products setting up booths at the park. Cowan oversaw the day’s activities, but left her dog at home.

“He’s an old guy,” she said, not wanting to have him be the only dog sporting a leash. “I wouldn’t be able to keep an eye on him.”
