Canyons Going With Three Quarterbacks

Share

Don’t look for any quarterback controversies at College of the Canyons.

Coach Chuck Lyon used sophomore Travis Winn and freshmen David Parker and Brian Hamilton in the opener on Saturday and plans to do it again this weekend. And perhaps the next. And the next.

“We are going to keep playing them until something happens,” Lyon said. “The sophomore starts [but] there’s no set number of plays they are going to play. It depends on how the game is going, how they are going.”

It went fine in Canyons’ 27-7 victory over Citrus in a Western State Conference interdivisional game.

Winn passed for 232 yards and one touchdown and Parker threw for 138 yards. Hamilton attempted only one pass, which was incomplete.

Lyon had nothing but praise for Canyons’ offensive line.

The Cougars gave up only one sack. Winn, Parker and Hamilton attempted 50 passes to eight receivers.

Coach Brent Carder of Antelope Valley has a freshman-dominated squad, but the defense is playing like veterans.

The Marauders defeated Santa Monica, 19-18, in a nonconference game Saturday, allowing two scores on fumble returns. Antelope Valley fumbled six times, losing four.

Carder singled out linebackers Adam Fabela and Jason Orians, who helped limit the Corsairs to 280 yards. Fabela made 13 tackles and Orians had four and an interception.

With the defense hanging tough, the Marauders rallied from an 18-0 halftime deficit.

“We did a good job of playing hard, but we didn’t do a very good job of executing,” Carder said. “The kids were very excited. They won’t be quite as happy after we watch film.”

Pierce Coach David Banuelos is drilling the Brahmas this week about foolish mistakes.

The Brahmas lost to San Diego Mesa, 28-25, on Saturday after leading, 22-7, through three quarters.

San Diego Mesa capped the comeback with a touchdown with 1:09 to play.

“We let them hang around. We should have put the ballgame away long before that,” Banuelos said. “They executed four fourth-down plays in the fourth quarter.”

Pierce had two touchdowns called back because of penalties. Another drive ended at the San Diego Mesa two after a 15-yard penalty for a personal foul.
