Sam Snead won the tournament a tour-record eight times from 1938 to 1965, including consecutive victories in 1949-50 and 1955-56. * Last week: Se Ri Pak ended Annika Sorenstam’s winning streak at four, beating Laura Diaz by two strokes in the rain-shortened Longs Drugs Challenge in Lincoln, Calif. Sorenstam tied for 43rd, 12 strokes back.

* Notes: Sorenstam is taking the week off. She’s expected to return next week in Stockbridge, Ga. . . . U.S. players are winless in 10 events since Pepper took the 2000 finale. . . . Pak is in the field along with other 2001 winners Sophie Gustafson, Lorie Kane, Catriona Matthew and Grace Park. . . . The event’s full name is the Kathy Ireland Championship Honoring Harvey Penick. Penick was the Austin golf icon who tutored Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Kathy Whitworth, Mickey Wright and Betsy Rawls. Penick died in 1995.
