* Notes: Tiger Woods is skipping the tournament. He’s expected to return for the Byron Nelson Classic May 10-13. . . . Sam Snead won the tournament a tour-record eight times from 1938 to 1965, including consecutive victories in 1949-50 and 1955-56. His 1965 victory made him the tour’s oldest winner at 52 years 10 months 8 days. . . . The Compaq Classic of New Orleans is next week.

* Last week: Se Ri Pak ended Annika Sorenstam’s winning streak at four, beating Laura Diaz by two strokes in the rain-shortened Longs Drugs Challenge in Lincoln, Calif. Sorenstam tied for 43rd, 12 strokes back.

* Notes: Sorenstam is taking the week off. She’s expected to return next week in Stockbridge, Ga. . . . U.S. players are winless in 10 events since Pepper took the 2000 finale. . . . Pak is in the field along with other 2001 winners Sophie Gustafson, Lorie Kane, Catriona Matthew and Grace Park. . . . The event’s full name is the Kathy Ireland Championship Honoring Harvey Penick. Penick was the Austin golf icon who tutored Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Kathy Whitworth, Mickey Wright and Betsy Rawls. Penick died in 1995.

* Last week: Bruce Fleisher won the Las Vegas Classic, his first victory in nearly nine months and 12th in three years on the senior tour.
