Jeff Young, who coached Chaminade High to Southern Section Division III-AA boys’ basketball championships in 1998 and 1999, has resigned to pursue college coaching opportunities.

Bryan Cantwell, 29, Young’s top assistant for the last seven years, is the leading candidate to replace him.

Young, 31, built Chaminade into one of the Valley’s most successful basketball programs. In recent years, he has turned down job offers from colleges.

“This kind of kick-starts me toward what my goal is,” Young said.

Young, who had a 140-59 record in seven seasons, told Cantwell before the season that this would be his final season.

“It’s [Cantwell’s] turn and he’s my best friend in the world,” Young said. “This is the only job he wants. My goal is to be a college coach.”

Chaminade finished 19-8 this season, losing to Compton Centennial in the Division III-AA quarterfinals.
