The Boston Red Sox have designated right-hander Bryce Florie for assignment.

Florie has 10 days to decide if he’ll accept the option. Otherwise, the Red Sox will have to trade or release him.

“Maybe all of a sudden I became a bad pitcher,” Florie said. “The way people are treated around here is no secret. I’m just next in line. I guess I’ll just sit and wait . . . wait for a trade.”

Florie, whose career was in doubt after being struck in the face by a line drive last Sept. 8, made a dramatic return to the mound this season, but has an 11.42 earned-run average in 8 2/3 relief innings.

“Yeah, it’s tough the way he’s fought back, the adversity he’s been through. To come back as quickly as he has, I don’t think I could’ve done it,” Red Sox Manager Jimy Williams said.

“But this is a business. There’s nothing wrong with his arm. He has a good sinker, a good slider. I just don’t have the right answer for you. Time could be the answer.”

In other moves, the Red Sox took left-hander Pete Schourek off the 15-day disabled list, optioned right-hander Sun Woo Kim to triple-A Pawtucket and recalled right-hander Carlos Castillo from Pawtucket.

Schourek was 1-5 with a 3.94 ERA in 29 2/3 innings before going on the disabled list July 7 with elbow soreness.

A tight hamstring will not delay Nomar Garciaparra’s comeback.

Garciaparra, recovering from off-season wrist surgery, tweaked his right hamstring Saturday during pregame infield practice with the Red Sox at Comiskey Park.

Garciaparra, who hasn’t played this season, isn’t overly concerned with his leg.

“Right now we’re more concerned about the wrist than the leg after four days of taking batting practice,” Garciaparra said. “We’ll make a decision tomorrow or the next day. Whether that’s rehab or what, I don’t know.”

Williams said the club was not ready to make a decision about when to activate Garciaparra or where the shortstop would go on a minor league rehab assignment.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays purchased the contract of shortstop Chris Gomez from triple-A Durham and designated infielder Andy Sheets for assignment.

Manager Hal McRae said Gomez, 30, will be given the chance to be an everyday player.

“We’re going to give him the opportunity to start and see what he can do,” McRae said.

Gomez was signed to a minor league contract June 27, five days after he was released by the San Diego Padres.

Sheets started 48 games at shortstop after taking the spot from Felix Martinez. Since a season-high seven-game hitting streak May 20-28, he has batted only .157 and was hitless in his last 15 at-bats.

Montreal outfielder Rob Ducey ruptured his right Achilles’ tendon in Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves and will be sidelined the rest of the season.

Ducey, 36, had to be helped off the field after falling awkwardly against the outfield wall in a failed attempt to rob Brian Jordan of a three-run homer.

The Mudville Nine’s California League game against the Lake Elsinore Storm on Saturday night was suspended in the sixth inning when the Diamond in Lake Elsinore was evacuated because of a bomb threat.

The game will be completed when Lake Elsinore plays at Stockton Aug. 3-5.
