A community group hopes to push the city of Redding into declaring a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The Shasta County Multi-Cultural Center’s board of directors Tuesday approved forming a committee to lobby the City Council.

City of Redding workers are among a shrinking minority in California who don’t take off the third Monday in January to honor the slain civil rights leader.

Jim Mark, the group’s chairman of the board, said it’s important that Redding validate King’s work by observing the holiday.
