Pittsburgh Surprises No. 11 Penn State, 92-88
Sheila Stufflet completed a three-point play with 18 seconds left in overtime and Brooke Stewart added two free throws in the final seconds to lead Pittsburgh to a 92-88 victory over No. 11 Penn State on Saturday at Pittsburgh in nonconference women’s basketball.
Laine Selwyn scored 26 points for Pittsburgh (5-2), which defeated a top 25 team for only the second time in two years.
Kelly Mazzante scored 36 points and Tanisha Wright had 28 for Penn State (7-2), which rallied from a nine-point deficit, but Pitt forced overtime when Selwyn made two free throws with one second left in regulation.
No. 5 Stanford 67, Pacific 56 -- Kelley Suminski scored 17 of her 22 points in the second half to help the Cardinal (5-0) rally to win at Stockton. Stanford used a 15-0 run late in the game to take control and outscore Pacific (2-6), 26-7, over the final 7:50. The Cardinal is still playing without its best player, Nicole Powell, who has not practiced or played because of a bulging disk in her back. Chelsea Trotter had 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for Stanford.
No. 6 Purdue 53, Indiana 51 -- Shereka Wright scored 26 points, including the decisive two free throws with 4.7 seconds left for Purdue in a nonconference game at Indianapolis between the Big Ten schools. Following the free throws, Jenny DeMuth took the inbounds pass the length of the court and drove for a left-handed layup but missed for Indiana (5-3).
No. 8 Notre Dame 84, Temple 61 -- Alicia Ratay scored 17 points and Notre Dame (5-1) used a 14-0 run early in the second half to take control at South Bend, Ind. Temple is 4-4.
No. 10 Texas Tech 84, Wyoming 64 -- Cisti Greenwalt had 26 points and eight blocked shots for Texas Tech (4-1), which made 11 first-half layups and won at Casper, Wyo. Wyoming (4-2) shot 16% from the field in the first half and trailed, 44-20, at halftime.
No. 15 Oklahoma 68, Texas Christian 64 -- Chelsi Welch scored 16 points, including six straight late in the second half, to help Oklahoma (8-2) rally at Fort Worth. TCU (3-5) pulled to within one with 14 seconds remaining, but Stephanie Luce and Dionnah Jackson made three free throws for the Sooners.
No. 16 Mississippi State 72, Illinois 67 -- Tan White had 19 points and six steals and Doceida Warren scored 15 points in a reserve role to help Mississippi State (6-1), which played without All-American LaToya Thomas, win at Chicago.
No. 17 Louisiana Tech 93, Nicholls State 50 -- Erica Smith scored 17 points for Louisiana Tech (5-2), which forced 34 turnovers and won easily at Ruston, La. Nicholls State is 2-4.
No. 20 Georgia 87, Tennessee Tech 56 -- Christi Thomas scored 17 points to help Georgia (5-2) win at Athens, Ga. Tennessee Tech is 2-3.
No. 22 Brigham Young 68, North Carolina State 57 -- Erin Thorn had 21 points and eight rebounds for BYU (6-2) at Raleigh, N.C.
Pepperdine 88, UCLA 67 -- Shandrika Lee scored 23 points and Anna Lembke had 16 points and 13 rebounds at Malibu, helping the Waves take command early in the game to defeat UCLA for only the second time in 13 meetings.
Michelle Greco had 31 points for UCLA (4-3), but she made only nine of 26 field goals. Pepperdine is 4-3.
