Clemens Reaches the Century Mark

Roger Clemens got his 100th win at Fenway Park in his final regular-season start there, and the New York Yankees moved 5 1/2 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East Division with an 8-4 victory Sunday.

Clemens (13-8) gave up four runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings to help the Yankees win two of three games in the series. He is 100-55 at Fenway, where he played for the Red Sox from 1984 to 1996.

Boston loaded the bases in the ninth inning against Jeff Nelson on singles by David McCarty and Lou Merloni and a two-out walk to Jason Varitek. But Mariano Rivera got his 31st save in 37 chances when he struck out Nomar Garciaparra.

Seattle 3, Baltimore 0 -- Jamie Moyer (17-6) beat the Orioles for the 14th consecutive time -- the longest current streak by a pitcher against one team -- and the Mariners completed a three-game series sweep at Seattle.

Seattle stayed two games behind Oakland in the West Division and moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Boston in the wild-card race.

Moyer gave up five hits and one walk in 7 2/3 innings. The Mariners got their 15th shutout -- tops in the majors.

Oakland 4, Tampa Bay 3 -- Rookie Rich Harden (4-3) got his first win in five starts, and the Athletics finished a perfect homestand with their ninth consecutive victory. Harden, who struck out 10 in seven innings, gave up five hits and retired 12 of the final 14 batters.

Chicago 6, Detroit 1 -- At Detroit, Esteban Loaiza became the league’s first 18-game winner, and the White Sox increased their lead in the Central Division to 1 1/2 games over Minnesota and Kansas City. Loaiza (18-6) gave up one run and four hits in eight innings.

Texas 11, Minnesota 10 -- At Arlington, Texas, Alex Rodriguez became the second player in major league history with six consecutive 40-homer seasons. He hit his 40th in the first inning, a two-run shot. Babe Ruth holds the major league record with seven consecutive seasons of 40 homers or more from 1926 to 1932.

Rafael Palmeiro followed with his 32nd homer and the 522nd of his career, passing Ted Williams and Willie McCovey for 13th on the career list.

Cleveland 5, Toronto 4 -- Ninth-inning throwing errors by catcher Kevin Cash and first baseman Frank Catalanotto allowed the host Indians to score twice.
