Long Beach Loses at Buzzer
Pooh Jeter’s short jumper at the buzzer gave the University of Portland a 71-70 victory over Long Beach State on Saturday at The Pyramid. Jeter scored a game-high 26 points as the Pilots improved to 7-2. Jibril Hodges led the 49ers (1-5) with a career-high tying 21 points.
Leading 70-69, Long Beach had possession and called a timeout with 27 seconds left. The Pilots then forced the 49ers to attempt a three-point shot, which missed. The 49ers had two chances for a putback, but Shawn Hawkins and Sam Byrd both missed.
Jeter got the ball with about eight seconds left and dribbled up court and made the game-winning basket.
Long Beach led by as many as eight points twice in the second half, the last time, 61-53, at the 8:20 mark.
