WHEN UCLA HAS THE BALL

Last week against Illinois, the Bruins ran the ball well with sophomore Maurice Drew and senior Manuel White, who helped UCLA rush for 273 yards and two touchdowns. Look for the Bruins to turn to their ground game if Washington uses zone defense in the secondary to slow down quarterback Drew Olson, who passed for a career-high three touchdowns against Illinois.

WHEN WASHINGTON HAS THE BALL

Quarterback Casey Paus, younger brother of former Bruin Corey, will start with backup Isaiah Stanback doubtful because of injury. Zach Tuiasosopo, Kenny James and Shelton Sampson will be the main runners for the Huskies’ ground game. Charles Frederick is the go-to receiver for Washington. The Huskies turned the ball over five times in their 35-16 loss to Fresno State.

KEYS TO A UCLA VICTORY

1. Stop the run: Oklahoma State had a field day and Illinois had some success against the Bruins’ run defense. Washington’s option will be a challenge for UCLA’s linebackers, especially junior Justin London, who will make his first start of the season.

2. Win turnover battle: The Bruins did a good job of protecting the football last week at Illinois and need to do the same against the Huskies, who are a better team playing with the lead.

3. Strong special teams: UCLA senior Chris Kluwe has not punted well this season and the Bruins need him to have a big game to keep good field position.
