Rules Review Already in Order

One of the things Mighty Duck Coach Randy Carlyle is finding in his first few days of training camp is that old habits can be hard to break.

It is as if former coach Mike Babcock’s defense-first style, or some would say clutch-and-grab style, found its way back to Anaheim Ice, the team’s practice facility.

Thursday’s scrimmage wasn’t nearly the wide-open, 13-goal shootout that occurred Wednesday.

Although he said the players might have come down from the high of returning to competition, Carlyle wasn’t happy with the lack of offensive execution in light of the number of new rules made to open the game.

“We’d better take notice to the new rules,” he said.

“Again, we’re reinforcing that there’s a change taking place and we’d better be prepared to acknowledge that and make some changes.”

Carlyle said many players have fallen back into hooking and holding players in the neutral zone, something the NHL is working to combat. The league sent a video to all 30 teams laying out the new rules on obstruction.

“We’ll reintroduce that tape that we’ve shown them once already,” Carlyle said. “We’ll try to have a much more in-depth conversation about it.”

Defenseman Jason Marshall said he senses the officials will be serious about the obstruction crackdown.

“It’s not going to be like before where they called it the first part of the year and went back to the way they did before,” Marshall said. “The changes are there and people are going to have to adapt. A lot of things they said we can’t do now, it’s almost habit for a lot of the guys.”

Players around the league were upset with the NHL players’ union for quickly promoting Ted Saskin to replace Bob Goodenow as executive director without consulting its rank-and-file membership, prompting Saskin to reopen the process to a secret ballot vote.

Goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, the Ducks’ player representative, said a number of players simply wondered why other candidates weren’t interviewed.

“This is not saying Ted’s not the best guy,” said Giguere, who received his ballot. “He’s done a great job for us the last 15 years. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t any other people out there that have what it takes.”
