Bringing the Met to the people
Opening night at New York City’s Metropolitan Opera will be open to all this year -- in a live broadcast at Times Square.
Traffic will be redirected and about 650 free seats will be set up Sept. 25 for the public to watch Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly,” directed by filmmaker Anthony Minghella, on a giant screen.
“This effort is symbolic of our plans to keep the Met connected to mainstream culture and contemporary life and will help build new audiences,” General Manager Peter Gelb said.
The performance will also be shown live on a giant screen at Lincoln Center Plaza, outside the opera house.
