Brett Favre to start for Vikings on Sunday

Brett Favre will start at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings in their exhibition game at San Francisco on Sunday and play a series or two, Coach Brad Childress said Friday in Eden Prairie, Minn.

Favre, who returned to the Vikings on Tuesday after weeks of uncertainty about whether he would retire, said he needs to be in a game.

“There’s no substitute for calling plays in the huddle in a real game environment, and the only way I’m going to get the speed of the game down is being in games,” he said.

The quarterback could earn up to $28 million this season, NFL.com reported.

In addition to his $13-million base salary, the Vikings have added a signing bonus of $3 million and $4 million in incentives. He also had $8 million of his 2009 salary deferred to this season.

The incentives are mostly tied to the Vikings’ performance in the postseason.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Percy Harvin was on the practice field in street clothes. He spent the night in a hospital after he collapsed on the sideline Thursday because of a migraine attack.

Childress said Harvin will not travel with the team for the game against the 49ers, and it is uncertain when he will be able to resume practicing.

Giants sign Andrews

The New York Giants signed offensive lineman Shawn Andrews, who was a two-time Pro Bowl pick with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Andrews missed the 2009 season and was limited to two games in 2008 because of back issues. He was released by the Eagles in March.

Andrews said he has spent the last 10 months rehabbing and working with a therapist in California.

Bengals beat Eagles

Terrell Owens caught three passes for 67 yards, including a 43-yard reception that set up a touchdown, and the Cincinnati Bengals beat the visiting Philadelphia Eagles, 22-9.

Carson Palmer completed 15 of 23 passes for 169 yards and had two passes intercepted, and Cedric Peerman rushed for two touchdowns and scored a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter for the Bengals, who trailed, 9-7, after three quarters.

Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb was 11 for 17 passing for 126 yards. Michael Vick completed one of five passes with two interceptions, and rushed three times for 34 yards.

Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, the No. 2 pick in the draft this spring, was uninjured in a car accident, police in Royal Oak, Mich., said. Suh was driving on a busy road in the Detroit suburb when he collided with a vehicle that pulled out in front of him at an intersection, a spokesman for the Royal Oak Police Department told Reuters. The driver of the other car was cited for a traffic violation, and Suh’s vehicle had to be towed away. . . .

Buffalo Bills tight end Shawn Nelson was suspended without pay for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s policy on substance abuse, the league said. . . .

The San Diego Chargers have given the Seattle Seahawks permission to talk to wide receiver Vincent Jackson, who is holding out from training camp.
