Fourth-seeded Mater Dei (26-4-2), ranked seventh in the Southland, scored in the bottom of the eighth inning against relief pitcher Jordan McPherson to force a semifinal against Riverside Poly in a rematch of theThousand Oaks tournament title game. In that contest, Mater Dei defeated Riverside Poly, 4-2, on May 8.

Royal, ranked No. 25 in the Southland, finished 21-8.

McPherson (9-4) came on in the seventh inning in relief of starter Mercedes Lovato (12-2), who allowed seven hits with no strikeouts. McPherson, who has done the brunt of the critical pitching this season, gave up three hits and walked one.

The Monarchs’ winning rally came as Allie Aleman singled to left field and stole second base. She took third on Katie Schroeder’s grounder to second. Pinch-hitter Valyncia Raphael then hit a line drive off the backhand of shortstop Andi Ramirez for a run-scoring single.

Briana Santos pitched the eighth inning in relief for the victory.

Royal tied the score in the top of the seventh inning against Mater Dei’s second pitcher, Arianna Cervantes, who defeated Royal, 4-1, on May 1. Cervantes came on with two outs in the sixth inning in relief of Britni Rodriguez. Devon Hofland walked, took second on a ground ball, and scored on Liz Prieto’s single to left field.

Corona 3, Righetti 2 (15 innings)
Fifth-ranked Corona (22-8) committed two errors in the top of the seventh inning to allow Righetti (26-8) to tie the score at 1-1 and force extra innings, and it almost cost the Panthers a trip to the semifinals.

That’s because Corona needed to score in bottom of the 10th to remain alive, and did so as Brooke LeSage singled and stole second, and Brooke Frydendall - batting with two strikes and two outs -- delivered an RBI single to left field.

Corona loaded the bases in the bottom of the 11th inning with none out but failed to score. They left 15 runners on base, but scored the one they needed in the 15th as LeSage singled, stole second, took third on a grounder to shortstop, and scored on Brooke Phipps’ single to left field.

Both pitchers went the distance. Corona’s Brittney Bargar (21-8) allowed seven hits, struck out eight and intentionally walked one. Losing pitcher Jenna Maiden (16-3) struck out 14 and allowed six hits and walked four.

Corona Santiago 7, Peninsula 6 (10 innings)
Top-seeded and third-ranked Santiago (26-3) scored twice in the bottom of the 10th inning to advance to the semifinals against El Modena. Santiago trailed, 5-1, going into the fifth inning, and needed a two-out two-run double by Kelsey Delannoy to force extra innings.

Katie Baldwin reached second on an error, and one out later, took third on a comebacker to the pitcher, and scored when No. 9 hitter Jessica Long delivered a full-count, 10-pitch double. Taryne Mowatt followed with a run-scoring gapper to left-center field.

Mowatt (22-3) gave up a career-high eight hits and struck out and struck out 13, five in the first two innings. She walked only one.

Mowatt had three hits, Kelsey Bruder had two hits, including a double, with one RBI.

Siera Smith had three hits and scored twice for Peninsula, and Monica Alnes had two hits and two RBIs. Michele Astiazaian also had two hits, including a double.

Alnes gave up 10 hits and struck out two Peninsula (16-12).

El Modena 2, Diamond Bar 1
Diamond Bar, ranked sixth by The Times, was eliminated in the Division II quarterfinals by No. 22 El Modena after the host Vanguards scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning on three hits, the last a run-scoring single by Natasha Madjd. El Modena had managed only three hits against Brittany La Rosa through the first six innings.

It’s an interesting trip for El Modena. It played in back-to-back title games before losing in the quarterfinals last season with a senior-laden squad. Now, with most most of that team gone, they are in the semifinals after having beaten teams ranked 10th and sixth in the Southland.

This latest victory was not without controversy.

Trailing, 1-0, the Vanguards got a single from Ariana Munoz, and after winning pitcher Dana Crucil struck out failing to sacrifice, Alex Ramirez singled. Third baseman April Lewis, who made several outstanding defensive plays, was then hit by a pitch on the hand, but only after Coach Steve Harrington requested help from a base umpire, who overruled the initial call that it was a foul ball. That loaded the bases, and the tying run scored on Wendy Sheehan’s bunt, and the winning run scored on Madjd’s single down the first base line.

Crucil (15-7) allowed seven hits and got the best of La Rosa, a sophomore who allowed six hits and struck out seven.
