Severe thunderstorm warning lifted for northeastern L.A. County

A severe thunderstorm that meteorologists warned could produce strong winds and dump hail on the Antelope Valley has passed through northeastern Los Angeles County without any reports of damage, injuries or flooding, officials said.

A severe thunderstorm warning was allowed to expire at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, however an aerial flood warning remains in place until 6:30 p.m., said Scott Sukup, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

“The worst of the storm is over, but there could be some flooding,” Sukup said.

Weather officials were concerned that “nickel-to-quarter-size hail” and winds topping 60 mph would tear through a remote area about six miles northeast of Saddleback Butte State Park. They warned people to take cover and prepare for deadly lightning.

But Sukup said the storm was now heading northeast to Boron, north of Edwards Air Force Base.

“There probably was some hail, but there aren’t that many people that live up there, so we haven’t had any reports,” he said.
